I tried making an ISO with IE removed - not just the IE developer tools, which I always remove, but the IE engine itself. But after installation, it only gives me a black screen, with mouse. I can bring up task manager using the keyboard, and from there open some programs and windows. But it doesn't reach the desktop. When I look at the running services, I see that many essential services are not running. (Could be because the system hasn't booted fully.)

I made another ISO with exactly the same things removed, except for IE. (ie, IE was not removed.) That ISO worked. So removing IE is causing the issue.

This black screen with mouse has been encountered before due to faulty updates. But in this case, clearly it is the removal of IE that is causing it.

So is there any way to remove IE safely? I had ticked the "Protect important files" preset in all cases.

Windows 8.1 X64 core and pro (tried both, same result), Winreducer EX-81 - v1.0.2.0.

Thanks, but I managed to do it successfully. I'm not sure what the problem was earlier, but after I read your post, I selected both the winsxs cleanup options. (Earlier I only selected the option without "resetbase".) It worked, although I cannot figure out why. But I have gotten rid of IE completely, and the system is running beautifully - smaller ISO and installed size, and less RAM utilization than ever before. Very Happy

@winter : You could close this thread, unless other people are still having similar issues with removal of IE.
